WHAT: This Father’s Day, The LOHM will host #CelebratingFatherFigures, a virtual panel to discuss parental incarceration. Among the more than 800,000 incarcerated parents in federal and state prisons, 92 percent are fathers. On any given day, approximately 2.7 million children have a parent in prison. Most of these children deeply miss and need a relationship with their parents. Our panelists will share their own experiences and discuss policies about the experience of having a parent in prison, how people parent from behind bars, and how families navigate reentry.

“Incarceration creates tremendous barriers to family unity,” said Topeka K. Sam, founder and executive director of The Ladies of Hope Ministries. “The stress, heartbreak, and physical separation that comes with having an incarcerated family member takes an economic and emotional toll.”

In addition to Topeka K. Sam, the following panelists are available to interview:

Monica Banks is the Founder and CEO of Unfinished Journey, an agency that will replace traditional recruiting with digital tools to help individuals impacted by the criminal justice system gain meaningful employment.

Asia Carter is a 13-year-old who testified in support of the First Step and Pretrial Diversion Acts.

Louis L. Reed is a life coach and the national organizer for #Cut50.

Ebony Underwood is the Founder & CEO of We Got Us Now, a national organization and movement built by, led by, and about children and young adults impacted by parental incarceration.
