Ms. Andrews has always had a strong interest in women's issues and justice; she chaired the Prince George's County Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, Free Kemba Smith initiative directed to all chapters by The Links, Incorporated. Ms. Smith, who had a middle-class upbringing and was enrolled at Hampton University, became involved with an abusive drug dealer and, at the age of 24, was sentenced to 24.5 years in prison for conspiracy in his drug activities. Because this was a nonviolent first-time offense, The Links, Incorporated, and many notable organizations rallied behind Ms. Smith and her parents. They galvanized a movement that resulted in her release and a pardon from President William Clinton.
