Navigating New Horizons: My Journey as a Justice-Impacted Woman in Tech

A woman working at a computer, representing a justice-impacted woman thriving in the tech industry

My name is Crystal Scott, and I am the Founder and CEO of Graceful Web Studio, where we build and maintain accessible Webflow websites for service-based businesses and healthcare organizations. With over a decade of experience in web development, I specialize in creating high-performing, inclusive digital experiences that aim to meet and exceed WCAG standards.

I am a Certified Webflow Expert and a Certified Professional in Web Accessibility (CPWA), an active member of the International Association of Accessibility Professionals, and a member of the BNI The Yakima Business Alliance here in Yakima, where I live with my family, including my three children and our two pit bulls.

The purpose of this blog is to share my journey, how I overcame challenges as a justice-impacted woman, carved out a space in the tech industry, and built a successful business rooted in purpose, resilience, and impact.

Early Challenges

Reentering society and finding my place in the tech industry was no easy feat. One of the biggest challenges I faced was fear, fear that potential employers would reject me due to background checks and the five-year gap in my work history. I knew this gap would raise questions that I wasn’t comfortable addressing in the early stages of job applications.

My journey into tech began while I was incarcerated at the California Institution for Women, where I learned how to code through The Last Mile program. I made a decision during that time that coding would be my career path, and I committed myself fully. However, upon release, my only experience was from a coding program in prison, which made breaking into the industry extremely difficult.

Turning Point

The turning point in my career came when someone saw my potential before I fully saw it myself. That opportunity gave me my first real step into the industry and changed everything.

It showed me that I was capable, that I had value, and that my past did not define my future.

That belief became the foundation for everything I’ve built since.

Education and Certification

In tech, growth never stops. I’ve committed myself to continuous learning, not just to stay relevant, but to lead.

I am currently a part-time student at Southern New Hampshire University, pursuing my Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design and Media Arts.

I am also a graduate of the Defy Ventures Entrepreneurship Program, which played a key role in strengthening my business foundation and entrepreneurial mindset.

Building a Business and Career in Tech

Today, I lead Graceful Web Studio, where I’ve built a thriving business working with a wide range of companies across industries. From healthcare organizations to service-based businesses, I help clients create websites that are not only beautiful, but strategic, accessible, and built to perform.

My work goes far beyond development. I help businesses improve their online presence, increase visibility, and connect with a broader audience through thoughtful design, strong structure, and inclusive practices.

Over the years, I’ve worked on complex digital projects including accessibility audits, full website rebuilds, and long-term maintenance strategies that support real business growth.

Work with The Ladies of Hope Ministries

One of the most meaningful parts of my career has been my work with The Ladies of Hope Ministries, where I have served as a web developer for over four years.

During that time, I built the Speakers Hub website and, in 2025, led a full rebuild of their WordPress website into Webflow, bringing the platform up to modern standards and supporting their internal growth.

Beyond development, I’ve also hosted multiple workshops for the organization, sharing knowledge, building confidence, and helping others see what’s possible for their own futures.

I believe deeply in the mission of this organization and the real impact it creates in the lives of women and men rebuilding their lives.

Advocacy and Impact

My work is rooted in more than just websites. It is about access, opportunity, and impact.

As a justice-impacted woman, I understand firsthand what it means to rebuild, to push forward, and to create something meaningful out of adversity.

Through my work, my business, and my voice, I aim to open doors for others and show what is possible with determination, skill, and the right support.

Future Vision

I am continuing to grow Graceful Web Studio while expanding my reach through education, workshops, and thought leadership.

My goal is to help more businesses understand that accessibility is not just a requirement, it is a competitive advantage, and a growth driver.

Conclusion

If there is one message I want others to take from my journey, it is this:

Your past does not define your future.

Your skills, your work ethic, and your commitment to growth will always speak louder.

And if someone cannot see your value because of where you have been, they are not the opportunity meant for you.
