Symptoms & Signs

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) lists the following 8
symptoms of diagnostic criteria of depression. Depression is often diagnosed when an
individual experiences 5 or more of the below symptoms during the same 2-week period,
with special attention paid to Symptoms Nos. 1 and 2:

Depressed mood that carries through most of the day and nearly every day.

Loss of interest or pleasure in all or almost all daily activities.

Significant weight loss (without dieting) or weight gain, and/or decrease or increase in appetite.

Slowing down of thoughts and a marked reduction in physical movement.

Daily fatigue or lack of energy.

Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt.

Inability to think or concentrate or indecisiveness.

Recurring thoughts of death or suicide.
